I was at my grandparents house in oklahoma and there were bats swooping by getting drinks from the pool and they were like grayish brown. It was dark out so I didn’t really get the image of them. Do you guys know what bats they were?

Building Bat Houses and how long before they had bats in them?

January 24th, 2012 1 comment

Has anyone else built Bat Houses? and if so how long did it take for the bats to find it and move in? i just built my first one and am hoping for a nice colony of Bats by summer.
hey Britney. I made it 18 inches x 20. It has 2 8 inch wide chambers. i used my skill saw and cut lots and lots of grooves across the surface of the back. I also left a 5 inch landing pad at the bottom for them to land on. I painted it flat black and hung it under the eves on the east side of the house as there was not anywhere high enough on the south side. Hope that I did not make to many mistakes

Gainesville Florida Bat Houses

This video of the emergence was taken on Saturday evening, October 23, 2010, at around 7:25ish PM. The “static” noise during the first minute or so is the echolocation being picked up by our bat detector (Pettersson D 200 series).

Making Bat Houses for Yard and Garden?

January 10th, 2012 2 comments

I’ve wanted to make bat houses for our yard and garden. We live right next to a farmers field and sometimes the bugs (flies) get very nasty at times. In the past few years we have been plagued with stink bugs too, although I don’t believe bats eat those.

I’ve always been fascinated by bat houses and wanted to make them; however, my husband is totally against it. He said the neighbors would complain, bats have rabies (ok I agree), and you don’t want them around (this is coming from a small town guy – I’ve lived on a farm and then 3 acres growing up).

Is it unethical to have bat houses in your yard? I have 1.5 acres out in the country.

Bat Rabies in the United States
Rabies is usually found in wild animals such as raccoons, skunks, foxes, coyotes, groundhogs and bats. Reports of rabies in bat populations are uncommon. Statistically, more people are killed by lightening strikes and dog attacks than rabid bats. Over the last 50 years, 40 people have died of rabies transmitted by bats in the United States; 34 were adults and 6 were children.
