I’ve wanted to make bat houses for our yard and garden. We live right next to a farmers field and sometimes the bugs (flies) get very nasty at times. In the past few years we have been plagued with stink bugs too, although I don’t believe bats eat those.
I’ve always been fascinated by bat houses and wanted to make them; however, my husband is totally against it. He said the neighbors would complain, bats have rabies (ok I agree), and you don’t want them around (this is coming from a small town guy – I’ve lived on a farm and then 3 acres growing up).
Is it unethical to have bat houses in your yard? I have 1.5 acres out in the country.

Bat Rabies in the United States
Rabies is usually found in wild animals such as raccoons, skunks, foxes, coyotes, groundhogs and bats. Reports of rabies in bat populations are uncommon. Statistically, more people are killed by lightening strikes and dog attacks than rabid bats. Over the last 50 years, 40 people have died of rabies transmitted by bats in the United States; 34 were adults and 6 were children.
